Containment

containment_350x525As Earth’s ability to support human life begins to diminish at an alarming rate, the Global Space Agency is formed with a single mandate: protect humanity from extinction by colonizing the solar system as quickly as possible. Venus, being almost the same mass as Earth, is chosen over Mars as humanity’s first permanent steppingstone into the universe.

Arik Ockley is part of the first generation to be born and raised off-Earth. After a puzzling accident, Arik wakes up to find that his wife is almost three months pregnant. Since the colony’s environmental systems cannot safely support any increases in population, Arik immediately resumes his work on AP, or artificial photosynthesis, in order to save the life of his unborn child.

Arik’s new and frantic research uncovers startling truths about the planet, and about the distorted reality the founders of the colony have constructed for Arik’s entire generation. Everything Arik has ever known is called into question, and he must figure out the right path for himself, his wife, and his unborn daughter.

Obviously, I liked it enough to check out your website. Your imagination and technical insight intrigued me and I’m going to read your other works as well.

  4. Just finished reading ‘Containment’ (downloaded from Amazon for my Kindle) and thoroughly enjoyed it but was left wishing there was more! Only suggestions would be to a) write more of the same! and b) maybe look at getting someone to draw a kindle friendly front cover that has some sort of picture because its a bit bland at the moment with just the title!
    Thanks and keep writing!

  7. Wow! I just finished reading Containment after zipping through all the other shorts (except this new one Epoch Index).
For someone who writes for just for fun in his spare time, your stuff is on par with the best sci-fi out there. Too bad to hear you’ve concluded that there’s no money in it, but major props to you for doing it anyway, doing it well and giving it away. A labor of love, to be sure.
It’s good to hear that you’ll be getting back into a longer work next time; I vote for that. The short stories are really fun, but Containment was a solid novel. Unfolds well, has great plot twists and more fantastic ideas than you can shake a stick at. Plus, a believable protagonist who can code! :)

A perfect journey told with immaculate restraint. I’m now heading back to amazon to find more of your work. Thank you again!

  12. I found the story engrossing although the minutiae of technical details at times overwhelmed it. However, I felt cheated.
I did not understand several things:
1 – What was Arick expecting Cam, Cadie, and Zaire to find? Arick was almost killed when the creatures attacked him. They would have been completely unprepared for this.
2 – What was everybody at the end looking at? His plantings had grown so much that were covering everything? Did he die? Why didn’t he go for help for the radiation poisoning to the place indicated in the recorded message?
I felt that there was too much left unexplained and kept looking for the next page in my Kindle.
I hope that there will be a sequel to fill the gaps.

  19. Who IS this man??? Honest to god, I was up all night reading “Containment”. Not only is it a riveting story, but there are little pearls of insight sprinkled throughout the book, so clipping those as I go along. I cannot wait to read the others.

  20. Yea wow! Just picked a cheap ebook to read on a cruise and I had no idea of the worth of what I had. I read constantly, books of all genres and this was just an amazing book – so imaginative, with some wonderful literary phrases, a great ‘hero’ and a fantastic plot that I did not guess. I have to congratulate the author – I am not often this impressed any more. I now would gladly pay full price for your work!

  23. Hi Christian,
I just finished Containment which I downloaded from Amazon for kindle on iPad for $0.99. What a great value your book is. I very much enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the technical “shop talk” around programming, and the generally IT related back story. I think it would make a great movie, to bad I am not a producer ;-)
I will add your other books to my reading list; if they are written anything like Containment they should be enjoyable. Keep it up!

  24. Yeah. Kinda confused about the ending. But doesn’t seem like a lot of other people are. Possibly due to how addicted I was reading this, and my own sleep deprivation:) Fantastic book, and if there’s ever a sequel, I’ll plan ahead to clear my schedule and devour that one too!

  25. What a wonderful surprise you are Mr. Cantrell. I downloaded Containment on my kindle, even though I had never heard of you, because the book was recommended and well reviewed, not because of the price. I started it yesterday and finished it this morning. It was smart and well paced. The main character was believable and sympathetic. I didn’t see the plot twist coming though the clues were there. I am hooked. But now I NEED to know what happens next!

  27. I *really* want a sequel for Containment, maybe seguing into the later plot devices with other post-apocalyptic genres.
I think a lot of us are willing to pay monthly subscriber rates to some private viewing area where we can see what you write on a live-ish basis. I’m willing to pay you $10/mo for this service (just for Containment’s sequel) and $50/mo for access to all your in-production writings. I’ll also offer free editorial advice ;)
I’ve been doing this pay-for-preprod ebook stuff for about two years now and find it most profitable for everyone (tho in my case, it’s a programming mastery book).
